This is just a random thought, but in these times, I thought about the resilience of the American Republic and our institutions. While nowhere near invulnerable, our republic has gone on for more than 200 years. Germany became a republic in 1919. Hitler rose to power in 1933. That’s not long enough for democracy to take firm root. In America, we could have gone that route too except we had George Washington. Here was a man who didn’t just walk away from seizing power; he did it twice. There’s a reason that Washington sets the tone for a lot of things in this country, and why he should continue to set the tone into the future.
