Haibun: Monkey, a variation

On Jan. 1, 2016, Asahi Haikuist Network published a haiku of mine. As an experiment, I’ve written a variation on that haiku as a short haibun:

Remembering my first trip to Japan: the surprise of our first morning on Hokkaido belonged to one of my traveling companions as he inspected what he thought was a fake monkey sitting in the store window.

the monkey in
the window—so lifelike—
stole my glasses
