Fighting Crime Jewpanese Style

Following a lead from a CNN post this morning, I found Jake Adlestein’s Operation Tropical Storm: How a Jewish-Japanese Special Agent Snared a Yakuza Boss in Hawaii.  It’s an entertaining read.  Language is a bit sensational, but it is a crime story.  Still it’s got a lot of angles that are interesting for me, Jewpanese, Japan, Hawaii.

The story takes place in 1993, which is the year before I left for graduate school.  It’s the Hawaii that I know (since the Hawaii since is a place I really seen from afar).  It is interesting to think of a Jewpanese FBI agent undercover in Hawaii.  When I returned from Japan in 2000, I did meet a woman who’s son was an agent in Hawaii who mentioned that the Bureau was still probably looking for Asian-looking Japanese speaking recruits.

Anyway, that was a lifetime ago and this was an interesting read.  Check it out if you get the chance.  It’s a Kindle single and a pretty quick read.
